CTO ANALYSIS
Automated routing moves a decision from the developer to the platform. That can reduce friction, but the organization still needs to define the quality, cost, and accountability expected from the combined system.
Recent context: GitHub published the linked announcement on 2026-10-28. The discussion below is CTO Tech Times analysis, rather than a claim of hands-on testing.
Define the unit of value
Compare accepted changes, review effort, and successful task completion rather than token price alone. A cheap model path that creates more rework can be expensive in practice. Establish a baseline on tasks the team actually performs, including cases that require repository context and collaboration.
Keep the experiment interpretable
Record the tool version, effort setting, policy configuration, and available traces for each evaluation. When results change, the team needs enough evidence to distinguish a routing change from a new task mix. Avoid a single aggregate score that hides security-sensitive or operationally risky failures.
Set an operating budget
Start with a bounded group of users and a weekly review of cost and outcomes. Define when a developer should escalate effort and when a human should take over. Expand only when the organization can explain what better routing improved and which responsibilities still sit with the author and reviewer.
